Newton Shield Play Off

Unfortunately, the Senior Team lost in the play off at Elderslie to Bonnyton by 3.5 to 4.5. Once again this was a sterling performance from the Senior Team, considering that there were at least 5 players who could not make the play off due to prior commitments. Overall it has been an outstanding Newton Shield campaign for Erskine in 2007. Maybe next year we will go one better and win it?

Newton Shield

In the final match of the current campaign, the Senior Team finished on a winning note with a very creditable 4.5 to 3.5 victory away from home at Greenock. The Senior Team have been excellent throughout the season and have only lost 1 Newton Shield match. The Junior Team were up against a strong Junior Team from Greenock and lost by 4 matches to 2 at home.

Newton Shield

In the penultimate match of the current campaign, Erskine Senior Team won by 5.5 to 2.5 at home against Cochrane Castle and have gained enough points to ensure that they finish top of the group, with the result of the final match away from home against Greenock now meaningless. A historical campaign indeed, as it is the first time ever that the Erskine Senior Team have managed to get to the play off stage of the Newton Shield. The Junior Team got to the play off stage last season, but lost to a very strong Paisley Junior Team. Can the Seniors go one better and win the play off? The Junior Team lost by 5 matches to 1 away from home at Cochrane Castle.

Newton Shield

In match number 8 the Senior Team put in another sterling performance and managed to draw 4-4 away from home at Elderslie. The play offs are surely within the grasp of the Senior Team. Unfortunately, the Junior Team were defeated once again by 4 matches to 2 at home to Elderslie.

Newton Shield

Match number 7 was another success story for the Senior Team winning by 5.5 to 2.5 against Caldwell at home. The possibility of finishing top of the group and reaching the play offs becomes more likely for the Senior Team. The Junior Team were under strength in their visit to Caldwell and lost 6-0 against the league leaders.

Newton Shield

In match number six, the Senior Team recorded their second “away” victory of the current campaign with a 5.5 to 2.5 win at Old Ranfurly. Erskine are now in a very strong position, and have an extremely good chance of winning the group, if they’re current form continues.  The Junior Team were awarded their match 6-0 against Old Ranfurly Juniors, who were unable to field a Team at Erskine

Ladies “Mail on Sunday”

The Erskine Ladies Team have, for the first time ever, reached the 6th Round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic. This competition is a nationwide inter club competition with 5 Ladies participating in each match. The Ladies who have managed to get Erskine to this stage are: Janette McCartney (6) Lorraine Morrow (8) Fiona Campbell (8) Patricia Davidson (9) Gina Mc Dougall (13) Marie Docherty (15) and Sandra Littlejohn (16). Well done Ladies.

In match number five, the Senior Team bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat with a very creditable home win against a strong Greenock Team. Newton Shield

In match number four, the Senior Teams recent good run came to a halt in losing by 7 matches to 1 away at Cochrane Castle, bringing their 100% record to a halt. ClubGolf Junior Academy Easter Coaching

Easter taster sessions at the club went extremely well with over 40 local children being introduced to the game and to Erskine Golf Club. We are the first golf club in Renfrewshire to adopt the ClubGolf scheme, following on from the Scottish incentive which was implemented a few years ago. Many of the children had already played holiday golf or had been to the range and the enthusiasm was incredible. The weather was very mixed but we only had one indoor session as they really wanted to get outside quoting "it never rains on the golf course" to us. PGALevel1 Coaches Janette McCartney, Graham McGee, Sandra Littlejohn, Fiona Campbell, Lorraine Morrow and Patricia Davidson put the boys and girls through their paces with an introduction to putting, chipping, pitching and the full swing over 2 sessions each. Plans are to hold after school clubs and supervised play sessions over the summer and to introduce even more local children to the game. Volunteers are needed to help sustain the future of the Junior Academy so if you are interested and you can give up a few hours a week, then please speak to Janette or Graham for further information. Full training will be given.

2005 News

Michael Daily was selected once again to represent Scotland at Under 16 level against the full England Team, after his recent good performance in his Scotland debut at Northumberland. The hard work and practice that Michael puts in to his golf appears to be paying dividends and is deserving of his dedication and commitment.

Ronnie Clark  was a key player in the recent success for the Renfrewshire County team who became Scottish Champions by winning the Scottish Area Team Championships at Bathgate.  He also represented Renfrewshire in their successful campaign in winning the West League.

County Cup Triumph

In the final of the County Cup played at Ranfurly Castle between Erskine Golf Club and Cochrane Castle Golf Club, Erskine were victorious by 3 matches to 1. Due to a late handicap reduction Jim Bruce could not compete in the final which meant Erskine had to win all 3 remaining matches to take the trophy. Against all the odds, at a neutral venue, Jamie Caldwell, Gordon Robbie and Raymond Day all managed victories and secured the trophy for Erskine. Team Manager Eric Watson took great delight in what was his first win as Team manager. Well done to all who participated in the final and also to those who played in previous matches.

D.J.Davidson Memorial Trophy

The inaugural D.J. Davidson memorial trophy was played for on Saturday the 3rd of September. This competition will now have a place on the Gents annual fixture list. The trophy was donated to the club by Mrs. Patricia Davidson in memory of D.J. who was a former Board Member, Newton Shield Captain, Newton Shield Team Member and much admired member of Erskine Golf Club. A Memorial bench will be erected at the 6th Medal Tee, a hole which held fond memories for D.J. for as well as having several birdie 2,s there, on one occasion whilst competing in a Saturday Medal, D.J. lipped out for another birdie 2, his ball rolled down the green and ended up in the bunker, from there D.J. proceeded to have several frustrating attempts to play the ball back onto the putting surface and ended up recording a 13 on his scorecard. Lesser mortals may have simply given up, not D.J. such was his commitment and determination.
