Erskine Golf Club actively participates in the clubgolf and girls in golf initiative to encourage children and juniors from an early age, to learn and play the game of golf. We have a group of volunteers, both male and female, led by PGA accredited coaches Janette McCartney and Graham McGee. All our coaches and volunteers are members of Erskine and are ever so keen to pass on their knowledge and skills to participants in the clubgolf programme.

Clubgolf is also supported by several European Tour professionals, who recognise the benefits and goals of the clubgolf initiative in the development of juniors and the game of golf.

The European Tour Professionals supporting the initiative are: Colin Montgomery, Paul Lawrie, Alastair Forsyth, Stephen Gallacher, Mark Warren, Peter Whiteford, Clare Queen, Catriona Mathews, Kathryn Imrie and Lynn Kenny.

clubgolf programme

The clubgolf programme was launched in 2003 to fulfil the Scottish Government’s promise to provide every child in Scotland with an opportunity to experience golf, part of Scotland’s commitment to the game which formed part of the successful bid to host the 2014 Ryder Cup.

The introductory game firstclubgolf is now well established across the country, and provides children with an opportunity to experience golf in Primary School.

clubgolf offers children a structured programme which supports their early development as golfers. clubgolf is aligned to Scottish Golf’s Player Pathway, ensuring opportunities for talented players to progress further based on their potential, commitment and achievement.

Junior golf flying high in Scotland

Scottish golf is flying high through clubgolf. In the past year clubgolf has introduced more than two thirds of Scotland’s Primary 5 children to golf. Meanwhile, junior activity in Scotland’s golf clubs is booming with over 8,500 children developing their skills through clubgolf coaching.

Child Protection

Child Protection is a fundamental part of the clubgolf structure, and as such the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association are committed to helping clubs and facilities delivering clubgolf with this important issue. To ensure children, coaches and club members can enjoy golf in a safe environment there are several things a club must do:

Have a Child Protection Policy in place

Each club or facility delivering clubgolf must have a Child Protection Policy. Scottish Golf has produced a Guidelines document to assist clubs when developing their own. You may also want to look at your Local Authority, Sports Council or other sporting organisations Child Protection Policies. To download Scottish Golf’s Guidelines for Child Protection for Golf Clubs & Facilities please visit the Child Protection section of the Scottish Golf Union website.

Have a Child Protection Officer in place

Each club or facility must have their own Child Protection Officer. This person will be the main contact for child protection issues and be responsible for implementing the Child Protection Policy. They will also be a signatory for Disclosure Scotland checks. Once your Child Protection policy and Officer is in place your club or facility will then be able to use the Scottish Golf Union Central Vetting System to access Disclosure checks. Please also see the info at the links above to find out how to put a Child Protection Officer in place at your club.

Disclosure Scotland checks

Every coach delivering clubgolf (paid or voluntary) must complete a satisfactory Disclosure Scotland check at enhanced level. This should be conducted through your club Child Protection Officer.

Training

Attending a sportscoach UK ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ workshop is compulsory for all coaches wishing to get a PGA Level 1 Licence. This training is paramount for anyone working with children in sport, ensuring that both adults and children are safe in their sporting environment.
